Some churches are of such complexity and significance, or the impact of the project so large and/or controversial, that a Statement of Significance and Need may not be adequate.
Where this is the case, the PCC or other body responsible for a church should consider producing a Conservation Management Plan (CMP). The Heritage Lottery Fund and other bodies may require such a document.
A CMP is a useful tool for recognising and reconciling tensions that may arise between the necessary life of the worshipping community and the significance of the place, and to help the church and its community to transcend these in order to develop and grow.
