MONUMENTS SYMPOSIUM

Cheyneygates, Westminster Abbey, 13 November 2012

From effigies and chest tombs to brasses, wall and floor monuments, our church monuments are facing a variety of risks and challenges. These include theft, decay, the effects of tourism and church closure.

This symposium aimed to raise awareness of some of the challenges to monuments that churches and cathedrals are facing and considered options for their protection and conservation.

It is hoped that the event will contribute to ongoing discussions about the future of our nation’s ecclesiastical fine and decorative art heritage.

Event Information

The Chair, Mrs. Anne Sloman OBE introduced the day and delegates were welcomed to Cheyneygates by The Very Reverend Dr John Hall, Dean of Westminster.  A number of talks were then presented (see below) and an open forum discussion was held.  This was followed by a short guided visit into Westminster Abbey to see first-hand the care and conservation of monuments in the Abbey (by Vanessa Simeoni and Lucy Ackland).  This was followed by Evensong for those wishing to attend.
