ANGEL AWARD FOR THE BEST REPAIR OF A PLACE OF WORSHIP 2013

This year the Angel Award for the best repair of a place of worship went to the St James's Restoration Fund and Parochial Church Council for the Church of St James the Greater, Ab Kettleby, Leicestershire.

The St James Restoration Fund (SJRF) was set up to raise funds for repair work and as a direct response to the threat of permanent closure. SJRF has worked with the PCC and the whole community has rallied and raised money and indeed continue to raise funds for the church. A successful grant application was made to English Heritage in 2007 for investigative work, and again in 2010 for an extensive body of repair work.

The project has galvanised the small population of 300. Village funds now ensure that maintenance is regularly carried out to avoid the problems of the past. The extensive programme of structural repair work was completed in April 2013 and an Easter Sunday 2013 service marked the reopening of the Church.
