NATIONAL CHURCH BUILDINGS FABRIC SURVEY

English Heritage funding for national church building survey

As announced in the Summer e-bulletin, the Cathedral and Church Buildings Division recently received a substantial grant from English Heritage to allow us to commission a National Fabric Survey of Church Buildings.

This involves analysing the existing Quinquennial Inspection reports of all our 16,000 churches to determine the degree of risk to each (using the English Heritage classifications of good, fair, poor or very bad).

We have appointed Locus Consulting, based in Donington, Lincolnshire to undertake this task, and they have already begun to gather data. The consultants will check their analysis with the DAC in each diocese.

The project will be completed by the beginning of April 2013, and the results will be made available from Ocober 2013, including as national statistics to inform English Heritage's Buildings at Risk register.
